My Unconventional Start in Pro Football

My football career began in the ’80s as a replacement QB for the Falcons during the 1987 Players’ Strike. They brought me in; I played a bit, the players came back, and the Falcons liked me enough to keep me around for the rest of the season. From there, I signed with the Saints but never suited up, and then ended up with the Calgary Stampeders while I bartended in Canada. Needless to say, it was a start, but not a glamorous one.

A Second Shot at the NFL

Just when I had thought my pro football career was over and that I would go into coaching, I decided to give playing one more shot. With no agent, I did the boldest thing I could have: I cold-called all (at the time) 28 NFL teams. Only two teams wanted to bring me in; one was the Detroit Lions.

From Tryout to Lasting Friendship

I flew out to Detroit, had my tryout, and you know the rest! If you want to hear more about that story, you can read about it in my book, The Ultimate Comeback. Today, I want to talk about my friend Bill Keenist, or should I say, recent NFL Hall of Fame Inductee Bill Keenist! Bill and I met in Detroit and built a friendship that has now lasted decades. He is a good friend, confidant, and one hell of a publicist! (The Detroit Lions and I agree on that one.) My friendship with Bill always makes me happy that the Lions accepted my call and brought me in!

Today, I want to introduce you to my friend Bill and let him tell you his story, from getting started up to the day the Hall of Fame called him up to tell him he was being honored. I figured no one could tell it better than him, so he and I sat down for a chat that I hope you enjoy!
